We open up this chapter with the revelation that Gaimon, you know, the old man stuck inside a chest from way back when? He’s apparently met a lady stuck in a barrel named Sarfunkel! Wonder if they’re planning to travel to Farborough Scair…

The escaping forces from Ryuuguu Palace gnash their teeth as they are forced to escape, but the minister of the Right assemble his forces and orders the men to start searching for Fukaboshi, and to start with Gyoverly Hills. But over there, trouble is afoot… as well as in every other district, as Hodis men have brought out a picture of Queen Otohime and order the citizens to step on it if they don’t want to be thrown out of Fishman Island! Which prince Fukaboshi does NOT take very well to… meanwhile the citizens who saw Shirahoshi escape before their very eyes speculate that she must have been tricked or forced to follow the Strawhats, while our good old buddy Caribou plots to kidnap Shirahoshi and sell her off for lots of cash!

Welp. At least the dude has a dream. Stupid and unlikely, but it’s his dream.

Back at the Sea Forest, we see that not only is Sanji back to his old self…

R-R-REJECTED

Nami still won’t give him the time of the day. Oh Nami. Never change. I have to admit I’m pretty impressed with his ability to pull a tea cup Shirahoshis size out of nowhere, though… anyhow, Nami puts the plot back on track by telling Jinbe to clarify what he meant by setting Arlong free, prompting Sanji to go into serious face mode and demanding an explanation as well because…

RRRUUUIIINEEED FOREEEEVEEER

…. Uh. Did this happen? This totally didn’t happen, did it? I don’t really remember all the details from way back then, but I do NOT recall Jinbe being mentioned by name back then. Man, Oda just pulled a retcon. It’s not like it’s a big one, or even something major, but still, a retcon. Think I need to catch my breath right now.

Okay that is silly moving on. Sanji tells Jinbe that Namis village suffered under Arlongs rule, prompting a two page flashback that I first kinda thought was padding, but I guess that newcomers might need their memories refreshed? Anyway, Sanji continues his white-knighting before Nami speaks up and gives HER perspective. She has no intentions of ever fitting Arlong for a set of Draco-brand leather pants, but…

OH I SEE WHAT U DID THERE

Ooooh snap. THAT is some mad awesome call-back action. Hachi then speaks up as well, and apart from the standard salvo of apologies he also reveals that all the fishmen longed to be a part of the surface world (there is also a panel of teeny tiny baby Arlong/Hachi/Chuu/others but they’re all in shadow GOD DAMN YOU ODA GIVE US OUR FANSERVICE), and that despite Ryuuguu Kingdom becoming an official kingdom in the eyes of ”Reverie”,( which is apparently another name for the World Government?) over 200 years ago humanity still continued to hate and oppress fishmen.

Jinbe takes over and tells them how Whitebeard prevented the age of piracy from being the end of Fishman Island, and how eventually two individuals took their own separate stands against the on-going discrimination: Queen Otohime who advocated a stance of pacifism, and Fisher Tiger who began an armed rebellion against all who would take slaves and advocated separation from humanity.

/Forget touching backstory- LIKE A BAWS

Also in this chapter, Luffy only vaguely remembering that whole ordeal about Hancock’s tragic backstory. Oh Luffy. Never change.

And as for what comes next, I’ll let these images alone speak for themselves…

Yeah this is pretty much too profound to snark about

AWW YISS FLASHBACK ACTION

Awwwright people. What I was waiting for this whole chapter- it’s flashback time! Someone said someplace else that it looks like Fishman Island arc will be to Arlong Park arc what Impel Down arc will be to Alabasta Arc- one major festival of callbacks and explanations, deepening our understanding of events and how things came to be the way they are. And while I must admit this chapter did feel like it was hella padded (first seven pages could pretty much be condensed into three I think), I’m way too excited about the coming chapter to care. Time to get our history lesson on!

... WELP WHAT DO YOU KNOW it's apparently dinner time and they're serving crow. I think we can all learn a lesson for this, and that is to always bow to Oda's foresight. Just do it. Right now as I am doing.

HISTORY, LOCK ON!

I'm so glad to see Sanji back to normal...ish. And the revelation between Saobondy and Arlong Park was definitely one of those WHOA moments. I'm wondering if the first half of the Grand Line was setting up the plot stage and the second half of the Grand Line is going to be ripping down to its roots? WE SHALL SEE.

If the whole point of the first half was to just scratch the surface, and the second half is to tunnel down and see how it all fits together... that wouldn't honestly surprise me because it's pretty common storytelling and all, but it WOULD impress me in just how dang much time Oda's spent on setting ALL those situations up. I for one cannot wait to see what Skypiea and Thriller Bark will lead to, if that's the case.

It feels like there's a terrible but awesome opportunity for a "cup size" pun in regards to that tea, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

Also TRAGIC FLASHBACK TIME! If Jimbe wants to join the crew he needs to follow the rules and out-sad the last one....meaning Brook's. Welp.

... While I am certain losing Fisher Tiger will be a sad moment for the Sun Pirates, I don't know if it will beat "MY ENTIRE CREW IS DEEEAAAAD".

Even if "My captain is dead and my former crew are all ASSHOLES now" is kinda tragic, I guess.
