First off: Captain looking foppishly stylin’ and football- The Straw Hat way. Which includes animals to fill in the gaps of the teams and a SPIKED METAL BALL instead of a football. Pirates play the most hardcore football you ever done saw. I like how Sanji and Luffy even cooperated to make the metal ball catch on FIRE.

The world stumbles deeper into chaos as two weeks after the war on the summit a request for help is received to aid a settlement under pirate attack. The pirates are there to loot all they can in preparation for their journey to find One Piece, which is a nice way of Oda to let us know that both Whitebeard and the marines bear responsibility for the current situation.
Speaking of said current situation, we turn to Amazon Lily! Where Ivankov and his zany crew apparently followed the Law pirates for some unknown reason, maybe they wanted to see if they could recruit some Amazons into the newkama bunch. Ivankov says that they’re going to head off towards Kammabakka Island while Jinbei stays behind due to his injuries. I guess you could say he doesn’t have the heartLuffy, whereupon she’ll feed him and hug him and love him and keep him forever and ever until he dies. Nyon says she can’t, Boa says that she can do whatever she wants because she’s the goddamn emperor and Nyon asks herself yet again why she helped the brat back into a seat of power in the first place. Even though she does admit to herself that she is impressed by Luffy- the ant who jumped right into the middle of a storm and came back to tell the tale…

Meanwhile, we go back to Laws crew who really REALLY want to explore the island, despite being told not to advance beyond a curtain that was put up around their camp because buggery only cuts it for so long and because the female pirate crew ”smelled so good”. While they banter on how much it would be worth risking utter petrification for just a glance at the lay-dees Bepo pipes up and wonders if maybe they have some lady bears there too, whereupon the others shoot him down. Man, I feel for Bepo. He’s not just one of many sexually starved dorks in orange jumpsuits, which I bet Law makes them all wear just so they won’t look cooler than he does, he’s of an entirely different race than everybody else so he has even FEWER ways to blow off steam. Although maybe he could ditch the suit and go prowling the woodlands in search of women bears (they totally exist) and get away with it. Anyhow, my heart goes out to you, Bepo. You poor, poor frustrated beast you.

And then, for the next five or so pages- Luffy breaking shit. He headbutts a boulder. He then heaves it into a group of trees. He pretty much rages to hell and back as the memories of Ace’s dead body keeps coming back to him, no matter how much he screams at them to go away. Eventually Jinbei steps in and tries to talk with Luffy, but Luffy interrupts him. For deep down, he already knows that he isn’t dreaming, and that the uncomfortable and terrible truth cannot be denied… Ace is dead.

And his face looks really messy and silly when he’s upset. Jinbei confirms that Ace is dead, Luffy cries some more and suddenly… flashback? NOW? Oy vey…

Ten years ago! Some distance from that village Luffy grew up in, Garp is taking wee Luffy to see a certain someone… the much speculated on Dadan, who turns out to be none other than Ace and Luffy’s future foster mother! Who in her first appearance begs Garp to take Ace back since she can’t handle his brat-ass any more.

Suddenly this flashback is ten times more appealing and interesting to me already. Dadan expresses her disbelief that Garp is going to force yet ANOTHER brat on her, whereupon Garp simply laughs and tells her that if she doesn’t want her gang behind bars for all their crimes then they better put up and shut up. Garp, ladies and gentlemen. Best, most responsible grandparent EVER. We then see little Luffy get spat on, which turns out to be how he meets Ace who HOLY CRAP killed a giant bullthing with just a spear. Garp hits Luffy and tells Luffy they’re gonna be bestest buddies from now on or so help him God, while Luffy and Ace just glare at each other. Lovely.

Personally I… am wary. I am not very interested in Ace but I guess that if we have to get his backstory in, might as well be now that we’re focusing on him what with Luffy’s grief and all. Mind you I would have preferred to move the plot along, but maybe Oda will surprise me and somehow sneak in some major revelation that will turn everything we know on it’s head. Anyhow, strap yourself in kids- we’re going baaack in time! Also, no chapter next week. Maybe I should be glad it didn't end on some super-exciting cliffhanger in that case.

... Oh captain.

You're not very good at this 'grace under pressure' thing are you?
