Jul. 5th, 2010 01:54 amCoverimage this time is Jinbei, Mihawk and a cannibal octopus enjoying a spicy octa-ball! Mihawk looks surprisingly non-threatening in that t-shirt.
Windmill Village enjoys a celebrity appearance by none other than Garp, having arrived in the sleepy little hamlet to put the fear of his fist into the increasing numbers of pirates in East Blue. The villagers feel much assured by his presence and protection, which happens when you have the guy who can sink whole battleships with his bare hands, but there seems to be trouble brewing at the bar. It has apparently been taken over by mountain bandits, and not just any mountain bandits…

Mama Dadan is not a happy camper. She blows up at Garp and asks him how he dares to show his face here when he allowed Ace to die, knocking him down and letting her fists and tears fly. But Makino jumps in between them and… man, I just got to include this picture.

Garp isn’t the only one barely holding back the waterworks, as Makino tells Dadan that surely Garp is the one suffering the worst right now, to which Dadan counters with saying that it’s Luffy who adored and loved his brother more than anyone else who’s really suffering. There is a flashback and our hearts break a little more as the mayor jumps in to switch subjects to Laws sweet submarine. It only lasts long enough for Garp to tell them that they think Luffy’s alive, because then Dadan…

Goddammit if this isn’t the second most awesome mom in One Piece right now. Bellemere reigns unchallenged so far and Rouge had a pretty nifty showing too, but right here and now Dadan has that silver medal in a solid, meaty grip.
We then move on to an unnamed island in the Grand Line, where…

… Things are ever so somber. Marco asks Shanks how they can ever repay him, but Shanks just tells him that he shouldn’t worry: he and Sengoku acted out of respect for Whitebeard, so no favors are necessary in return. And as Shanks leaves his thoughts go out to Luffy, as he wishes Luffy will not hold back either tears or his emotions: break down so that you can someday build yourself up again. On the Island of Women, Luffy obliges.

Jinbei tries logic. It’s not very effective… but he’s still in better shape than Luffy, which he proves as he effortlessly tosses the enraged Luffy to the ground and proceeds to have a flashback. And then, in sharp contrast to all known laws of anime- Luffy takes advantage of the flashback to get in a sneak-attack!

It’s not very effective either… and now, Jimbei has had enough. He lays it all out on Luffy: yes, he has been soundly beaten and trounced, yes, he has lost his brother and his self-confidence, but has he lost everything?

… Aaaand the entirety of One Pieces readers join Garp in the misty-eyes corner. But not Jimbei. He simply sighs with relief as he remembers what Ace told him: that he knew Luffy would be okay no matter what, because of the fine crew that he had assembled. And so we close the curtain on this chapter, this wonderful climax, with Luffy calling out for his nakama- and the story finally moving towards the long-delayed, long-awaited reunion.
As for when we see the whole gang again, well… I personally wouldn’t be surprised if Oda didn’t try to give us something special for chapter 600, but I’ve been wrong in the past, so don’t take my word for it. Now if you’ll excuse, I have something in both of my eyes. And my heart. And all of my feelings for that matter...

Although what I really, really want before we get to the big happy reunion is a MARINES INTERLUDE. We need more Tashigi and Smoker >(
